Quick Read
- Ramayana Day 1 India net: ₹64.85 crore. Adipurush Day 1 India net: ₹86.75 crore — a gap of ₹21.90 crore.
- Adipurush opened on 6,000+ screens with huge advance booking; Ramayana opened on fewer screens with a staggered release.
- The makers’ ₹155 crore Day 1 worldwide claim for Ramayana sits above Sacnilk’s ₹127.50 crore — treat it as a claim, not a fact.
Ramayana opened on 5 November with ₹64.85 crore net in India on Day 1, per Sacnilk. That is a huge number — the biggest opening day ever for an Indian film in India net terms. Yet it is below Adipurush, which made ₹86.75 crore net in India on its Day 1 in June 2023.
The gap is ₹21.90 crore. Why did a film as big as Ramayana open below a film that later flopped? The answer is not quality. It is about screens, advance booking, and how the two films were released.
Reason 1: screens and advance booking
Adipurush opened on more than 6,000 screens in India, with a massive advance-booking push. Its producers sold tickets weeks in advance, and the opening day was packed before the first show began.
Ramayana opened on fewer screens. Its release was staggered — not every screen showed it on Day 1 — and its advance booking, while strong, did not match Adipurush’s record pre-sales. Fewer screens plus less advance means a lower Day 1, even if the film is better.
Reason 2: the Day 1 record is a different race
Day 1 numbers measure the opening, not the film. A big opening needs two things: huge advance sales and maximum screens on day one. Adipurush had both. Ramayana had a strong but smaller opening, and its real strength is showing in the days after: Day 2 added ₹48.05 crore net, and Day 3 advance is ₹47.46 crore gross.
Adipurush, by contrast, fell hard after Day 1. Its opening was front-loaded — most of its audience came on day one, and the film faded fast. A film that opens at ₹64.85 crore and holds well can earn more in total than a film that opens at ₹86.75 crore and collapses.

Reason 3: net vs gross, and the claim gap
Two number traps confuse readers. First, net vs gross: net is what remains after entertainment tax; gross is the full ticket price. Sacnilk reports net for India. The makers’ ₹155 crore Day 1 worldwide claim is a gross figure, and it sits ₹27.50 crore above Sacnilk’s ₹127.50 crore worldwide gross. Always check whether a number is net or gross before comparing.
Second, the makers’ claim: producers count gross collections from all sources, including overseas estimates trackers have not verified. Sacnilk counts what it can verify. This post uses Sacnilk as the desk figure and reports the makers’ ₹155 crore as a claim.
What the numbers say so far
After two days, Ramayana’s India net is ₹112.90 crore and its worldwide gross is ₹221.05 crore. The film cost a reported ₹1,400 crore to make, so it needs a long, strong run. The early signs are good: a 25.9% Day 2 fall is normal after a record opening, and the Day 3 advance is strong.
The lesson: Day 1 is a sprint, not the race. Adipurush won the sprint and lost the race. Ramayana’s race is still running.
