Diwali falls tomorrow, Sunday 8 November 2026. The heart of the festival is Lakshmi Puja in the evening — the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, with lamps, flowers and sweets. Here are the timings for your city, and the steps of the puja.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat by city

The muhurat — the auspicious window — for Lakshmi Puja on 8 November:

CityLakshmi Puja muhurat
Delhi5:54 PM – 7:50 PM
Mumbai6:27 PM – 8:27 PM
Kolkata5:20 PM – 7:18 PM
Hyderabad6:07 PM – 8:08 PM

These timings come from Drik Panchang. The window is about two hours in each city. If you miss the start, you can still do the puja within the window — the whole period is auspicious.

Amavasya tithi

Lakshmi Puja is done on Amavasya, the new-moon night. This year Amavasya begins at 11:27 AM on Sunday 8 November and ends at 12:31 PM on Monday 9 November. The puja is done in the evening of 8 November, inside the muhurat above.

Two other dates to note. Bhai Dooj falls on 11 November. Govardhan Puja is disputed this year — the Economic Times says 9 November and HinduTone says 10 November. This post does not pick one; check your local calendar.

Puja steps, in short

Clean the house and the puja place in the morning. In the evening, light diyas at the entrance and in the puja room. Place the idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha on a clean cloth, offer flowers, rice, sweets and coins, and read or listen to the Lakshmi Katha. End with aarti and share the prasad with family.

Green crackers, where allowed, may be burst only in the fixed hours — 6–7 AM and 8–10 PM on 7 and 8 November in Delhi-NCR, with a QR code on the box and 300-metre exclusion zones around hospitals and schools. The ban returns on 9 November.
