Quick Read
- Muhurat Trading is on Sunday 8 November 2026, 2:20–3:30 PM, on both NSE and BSE.
- It marks the start of Samvat 2083, the new year in the Hindu calendar followed by traders.
- The session is symbolic — one hour, low volumes. Buy small, for luck, not for quick profit.
Muhurat Trading is the stock market’s Diwali tradition. Once a year, on Diwali evening, the exchanges open for a special one-hour session. Traders buy a few shares for good luck, and the session marks the start of the new trading year — Samvat 2083 this time.
This year it falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, from 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM, on both the NSE and the BSE.
Timings: the full schedule
The session runs in two parts. The pre-open runs from 2:00 PM to 2:08 PM — that is when orders are collected and the opening price is set. The main session runs from 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM. That is the one-hour window when trading actually happens.
After 3:30 PM, the market closes. There is no post-close session of note for most investors. The exchanges then shut for the Diwali holiday, and normal trading resumes on Monday.

What is Muhurat Trading, in plain words
“Muhurat” means an auspicious time. In the old days, traders opened new account books — the “bahi khata” — on Diwali, and bought a token share for prosperity. The exchanges kept the tradition alive as a special session.
Today it is mostly symbolic. Volumes are low, because it is a one-hour session on a Sunday evening. But the mood matters: it comes at the end of the best week in six years, with the Sensex up 8.82% in the week and the rupee at a six-month high.
Rules for first-timers
Five rules if you are trading for the first time. One, keep it small — buy a token amount, for luck, not for profit. Two, pick a stock you already know and like; do not chase a tip. Three, place a limit order, not a market order, so you control the price. Four, check that your broker supports Muhurat Trading — most do, but confirm. Five, remember the session is only one hour; if your order does not fill, do not chase it.
One more thing: Muhurat Trading is not a prediction. A green close on Diwali does not mean the year will be green, and a red close does not mean a bad year. It is a tradition, not a signal.

What to watch after the session
Two things will matter on Monday. First, whether the festive mood holds — the Sensex has risen for seven straight sessions, and traders will watch if the rally continues. Second, foreign investor flows: the rupee’s rise to 93.91 was helped by steady inflows, and those flows matter more than any one-hour session.
