Voter list: EC gives Delhi time till Nov 25

Good news if your name is missing from the voter list, or wrong on it. The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadlines for fixing voter rolls in Delhi and five states. The orders came on Thursday, 29 October — a day after the Supreme Court asked the EC to think again about its dates.

Here’s the change in one line: voters get more days to file claims (add a name) and objections (remove a wrong name or fix details). In five states, the window had already shut. The EC has now reopened it.

This is the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of voter rolls. It’s a full check of the list — who’s on it, who shouldn’t be, and who’s missing. Phase 3 of SIR started on 14 May and covers 16 states and three Union Territories.

The new dates, state by state

Delhi: file claims and objections till 25 November, up from 30 October. Officials will settle claims by 15 December. The final voter list comes out on 22 December.

Maharashtra: file till 13 November, up from 26 October. Claims get settled by 25 November. Final list: 30 November.

Andhra Pradesh and Haryana: file till 20 November. Claims get settled by 20 November too, per the revised schedule. Final list: 30 November.

Nagaland: file till 25 November. Final list: 30 November. Telangana: file till 26 November. Final list: 30 November.

One reporting conflict to flag honestly: one outlet (ET Now) put Maharashtra’s filing deadline at 25 November, not 13 November. The Indian Express, Business Today, The Week and India TV all say 13 November for filing and 25 November for settling claims. We’ve gone with 13 November, since that matches the EC’s own pattern and most reports — but do double-check the Maharashtra CEO site before you travel to file.

Why the Supreme Court stepped in

On 28 October, a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned the rush. The judges asked why Delhi faced a hard 30 October deadline when no election is due there soon. They also raised the Form 6 issue — the form first-time voters file — and asked the EC to consider giving people more time.

The EC told the court it was willing to extend if needed. A day later, it did — not just for Delhi, but for five states as well. The EC said it acted after requests from the chief electoral officers of those states.

This is the third time the SIR timelines have been pushed, per Business Today. The exercise has been revised more than once as problems cropped up on the ground.

What you must do before your deadline

Here’s the part that counts for readers. First, check your name on the draft voter list. You can do this on the EC’s Voters’ Service Portal or at your local election office. Don’t assume you’re on it — the whole point of SIR is that names have shifted.

Second, if your name is missing, file a claim (Form 6 for a new voter). If a detail is wrong — spelling, address, age — file a correction. If you spot a name that shouldn’t be there, like someone who moved away or died, file an objection. Keep a copy or screenshot of whatever you submit.

Third, don’t wait for the last day. Portals slow down and offices get crowded near deadlines. Delhi voters have till 25 November, but the smart move is to file this week. Voters in Maharashtra have the shortest new window — just till 13 November.

What happens after you file

After the filing window closes, officials issue notices and settle each claim. That’s the “disposal” stage, with its own dates above. Only after that comes the final list — 30 November for the five states, 22 December for Delhi.

If your claim is rejected, you’ll get a notice and a chance to respond during the disposal stage. That’s why the gap between filing and final publication exists. It’s not dead time — it’s when disputes get heard.

And one caution: this extension covers only these six places — Delhi, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Telangana and Nagaland. If you live elsewhere, your state’s SIR dates are different. Check your state CEO’s website, not a forwarded WhatsApp message.
