Brent crude falls 8.7% to $94.62: India gains

Oil prices crashed on Wednesday. Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell 8.7% to $94.62 a barrel. It was the lowest close since 31 August.

The fall came a day after the US midterm elections. Traders bet that the result will push Washington to end the war with Iran faster. Cheaper oil is good news for India, which buys about 85% of its crude from abroad.

Quick Read

  • Brent settled at $94.62 a barrel on 4 November, down $8.98 or 8.7%. US crude (WTI) fell 8.3% to $88.12.
  • Brent has fallen 19.6% in three sessions, its worst three-day slide since April 2020.
  • Indian pump prices did NOT fall. Delhi petrol stayed at ₹102.12 a litre and diesel at ₹95.20.

What happened

Brent crude futures settled $8.98 lower at $94.62 a barrel on Wednesday, 4 November. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell $7.97, or 8.3%, to $88.12. Both closed at their lowest since 31 August.

Brent is the price the world watches. WTI is the US price. India buys crude priced off Brent, so the Brent number is the one that counts for us.

The slide did not stop there. Brent slipped about 1% more on Thursday, to $93.66 a barrel. Just last Friday it was trading near $118. In less than a week it has lost about a fifth of its value.

Why prices fell

The trigger was politics, not supply. Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate in the midterms. Traders read that as a lower chance of fresh US strikes on Iran. They bet that the eight-month war could end sooner, which would let more oil flow.

President Donald Trump told Fox News on Tuesday night that “I think it’s the gasoline price” when asked why his party lost. Vice President JD Vance blamed the war for the defeat. Trump had already told the Financial Times that the US had no immediate plans to strike Iran.

Nomura, the Japanese bank, said in a note that the two sides’ positions in peace talks may now flip, with Iran more willing to negotiate. But it also warned that the fall is driven by hopes, not a signed deal. If talks break down, prices can jump back just as fast.

The week in numbers

The fall built up over four days:

DayBrent move
Monday−7.63%
Tuesday−1.12%
Wednesday−8.67%
Thursday−1.01%

Put together, Brent fell 19.6% in three sessions, according to MarketWatch. That is the steepest three-session drop in more than six years, since April 2020. US crude stocks also fell by 865,000 barrels to 409.8 million barrels in the week to 30 October, the US Energy Information Agency said. Normally a stock fall pushes prices up. This time politics won.

What it means for India

India imports about 85% of the oil it uses. When crude is dear, the import bill swells and the rupee feels the strain. When crude falls, the bill shrinks. That is why this slide counts for us.

A smaller oil bill helps in three ways. It eases pressure on the rupee, since crude is bought in dollars. It cools inflation, since fuel feeds into the price of almost everything that moves by road. And it gives oil firms and the government more room to hold pump prices steady.

Will petrol get cheaper?

Not at once. Delhi petrol stayed at ₹102.12 a litre and diesel at ₹95.20 even after Brent fell about 9% in two days. Rates were also unchanged in Noida, Gurugram, Lucknow, Jaipur, and other big cities.

Here is why. A one-day crash does not cut the pump price the next morning. Oil firms set pump prices from an average of global prices over recent days, not a single day’s close. They also buy crude weeks ahead. So a sharp fall takes time to show up at the pump, if it lasts at all.

The gain for India is real but slow. If Brent stays near $94 for weeks, the import bill drops and the pressure on fuel prices eases. If it bounces back to $118, this week will look like a blip.

FAQs

Q: How much did crude oil fall after the US midterms?

A: Brent crude fell 8.7% to $94.62 a barrel on Wednesday, 4 November, and slipped about 1% more on Thursday to $93.66. US crude (WTI) fell 8.3% to $88.12. Brent has lost 19.6% in three sessions.

Q: Will petrol and diesel prices fall in India now?

A: Not at once. Delhi petrol stayed at ₹102.12 a litre and diesel at ₹95.20 after the fall. Pump prices follow an average of global prices over recent days, not one day’s close, so a crash takes time to reach the pump.

Q: Why did the US election move oil prices?

A: Democrats won both chambers of Congress. Traders bet this will push Washington to end the war with Iran sooner, which would let more oil flow and keep prices low. The fall is driven by that hope, not a signed peace deal.
