Today’s rates, one source

Gold rates differ slightly between websites, because each uses a different source and a different time of day. This post uses ONE source throughout — NDTV Profit’s October 28 table — so the numbers inside it agree with each other. Do not mix these with another site’s table. Around 6:40 am on October 28, 24K gold stood at ₹1,44,490 per 10 gram, while silver was at ₹1,97,040 per kg, NDTV Profit reported. 22K gold stood at ₹1,32,449 per 10 gram, and 925 sterling silver at ₹1,82,262 per kg, as per Bullion.co.in data quoted by NDTV Profit. City-wise 24K gold (per 10 gram): Mumbai ₹1,44,230; Delhi ₹1,43,980; Chennai ₹1,44,650; Kolkata ₹1,44,040; Bengaluru ₹1,44,340; Hyderabad ₹1,44,460. City-wise 22K gold (per 10 gram): Mumbai ₹1,32,211; Delhi ₹1,31,982; Chennai ₹1,32,596; Kolkata ₹1,32,037; Bengaluru ₹1,32,312; Hyderabad ₹1,32,422. City-wise silver (999 fine, per kg): Mumbai ₹1,96,690; Delhi ₹1,96,350. Silver rates in other metros were in the same range, near ₹1,96,000-1,97,000 per kg.

Why gold moved this week

Gold rose about 1 per cent on October 27 in the international market, NDTV Profit reported. The reason is the US Federal Reserve: investors are waiting for its policy decision, due tonight, and expectations of the Fed’s next move shape the dollar and gold together. On October 27, gold futures on India’s MCX (December expiry) rose 0.74 per cent to settle at ₹1,44,138 per 10 gram. Silver futures rose about 0.5 per cent to ₹1,96,717 per kg. Early on October 28, Comex gold slipped marginally by 0.07 per cent to $4,071.60 per ounce, and Comex silver fell 0.34 per cent to $54.33 per ounce, at around 1:14 am GMT. In plain words: gold gave back a small part of Tuesday’s gain before Indian markets opened, but stayed near its highs. For Indian buyers, three things decide the shop price: the international gold price, the rupee-dollar rate, and domestic demand ahead of festivals. Dhanteras falls on November 6 and Diwali on November 8 this year, so festive buying is about to pick up — and jewellers’ making charges and GST sit on top of the rates above.

What to check before you buy

First, purity: 24K is pure gold but too soft for most jewellery; 22K is the usual jewellery purity. Second, hallmark: look for BIS hallmarking on the piece. Third, the bill: the final price adds GST and making charges to the per-gram rate, so the shop bill will be higher than the rates in this post. Rates in this post are indicative morning rates. They move through the day with the international market and the rupee. Before paying, ask your jeweller for the live rate at that hour.
