Quick Read
- Jio IPO subscription on Day 1 reached 57% by 9:39 AM: institutions (QIB) 1.9x, NII 0.11x, retail 0.09x, employees 0.21x — per NDTV Profit’s live update.
- The grey market premium is ₹270–273, pointing to about 24% listing gain over the ₹1,119 upper price band (ipoji, ET Now).
- One lot = 12 shares, minimum ₹13,428. The issue closes October 23; listing is October 28. This is not financial advice.
The Jio Platforms IPO opened for subscription on Wednesday morning and got off to a quick start. By 9:39 AM, the ₹30,213-crore issue was 57% subscribed overall — 0.57 times, in IPO language — with big institutional buyers leading the charge at 1.9 times their share quota, per NDTV Profit’s live subscription tracker.
Retail investors were slower out of the gate: 0.09x, or 9%. Non-institutional investors (the HNI quota) stood at 0.11x, and the employee quota at 0.21x. That’s the usual Day-1 pattern — institutions place big orders early; retail money tends to arrive on Days 2 and 3.
Who’s buying, and who isn’t
Four groups can apply, and the numbers tell four stories.
QIBs — Qualified Institutional Buyers — are the big funds: banks, mutual funds, insurance companies. They had already booked 1.9 times their portion before 10 AM, per NDTV Profit. NIIs, the non-institutional bucket for large individual investors, were at just 0.11x. Regular retail investors sat at 0.09x. Employees, who get a reserved quota, were at 0.21x.

Don’t read too much into the early QIB number. It signals mood, not outcome. Institutional demand is often front-loaded — and retail allotment works like a lottery when an issue gets oversubscribed, so a strong QIB book tells you nothing about whether you’ll get shares.
What the grey market is saying
The grey market premium — GMP — was last recorded at ₹273 at 7:37 AM, per ET Now, with ipoji’s table showing ₹270. Add that to the ₹1,119 upper price band and you get an indicative listing price of about ₹1,389–1,392. That’s a ~24% listing gain on paper. ET Now works it out as roughly ₹3,276 profit on one 12-share lot.
GMP has been climbing all month: ₹148 on October 4 to ₹273 today, per ET Now. But read the fine print of the fine print: GMP is an unofficial price quoted by dealers. It is not regulated, it can collapse overnight, and it is not a forecast.
The brokerages’ verdict
Of the four brokerages tracked by ET Now, three say “Apply”: Canara Bank Securities, Kantilal Chhaganlal Securities and Swastika Investmart. Capital Market says “May Apply.”
Canara Bank Securities recommends it for long-term investors, per The Economic Times — betting on customers moving from 2G to 4G and 5G networks, rising home-broadband demand, and Jio taking its technology to overseas markets.
Why Meta and Google are smiling: Jio has raised money before. Back in 2020, when the pandemic hit, it sold shares on a private basis to giants like Meta (through Jaadhu Holdings), Google, General Atlantic, Intel Capital and Qualcomm at ₹488–549 a share, per the RHP data quoted by NDTV Profit. Meta bought the biggest chunk — about a 10% stake — worth roughly ₹43,573 crore at the time.
At the ₹1,119 upper band, that 2020 bet has more than doubled in value. Ahead of this IPO, Jio’s anchor book pulled in ₹8,109.85 crore from 212 investors on October 19, with LIC’s ₹500-crore cheque the largest, per ET Now.

The fine print
Price band: ₹1,065–1,119 per share. Lot size: 12 shares — that’s ₹13,428 minimum at the top end, per ipoji. Bidding closes Friday, October 23 (5 PM for retail; 4 PM for QIB and NII), with UPI mandates to approve by 7 PM. Allotment is expected October 26, shares hit demat accounts October 27, and the stock lists on BSE and NSE on October 28, per ipoji.
And the warning in plain words: none of this is financial advice. A hot GMP and strong Day-1 numbers don’t promise listing gains or future returns — ET Now says exactly that. Decide on your own reading of the company’s numbers and your own risk appetite.

We can’t answer that — this isn’t financial advice. What we know: brokerages are mostly positive (three “Apply,” one “May Apply” per ET Now), the grey market hints ~24% listing gain, and the QIB book filled fast on Day 1. Weigh that against your own risk appetite before you bid.
