Over 5.9 crore returns were filed for AY 2026-27 by July 31 — about 40 lakh on the last day alone (GyanPark). If your refund still hasn’t arrived by mid-October, you are not alone.

Here are the 3 official ways to check your ITR refund status, what each status message means, and how to fix the delays.

Quick Read

  • 5.9+ crore ITRs filed for AY 2026-27 by the July 31 deadline; around 40 lakh came in on the final day (GyanPark).
  • Check status three ways: the income tax portal (login with PAN), the NSDL/Protean refund-status page, or Form 26AS on TRACES.
  • The most common reason October refunds are still pending: the return was never e-verified — and the 30-day e-verification deadline is the step most filers miss.

If you filed your income tax return before the July 31 deadline and your refund still hasn’t hit your bank account by mid-October, don’t panic — but don’t wait either. More than 5.9 crore returns were filed for assessment year 2026-27, with around 40 lakh landing on the last day itself, according to GyanPark. Refunds move in batches, and small fixable problems hold many of them up. Here is how to check exactly where your refund stands, and what to do about each hold-up.

First, the step most people skip: e-verification

Start here, because this is the single most common reason refunds are still pending in October. Filing your return is only half the job — you must also e-verify it, normally within 30 days of filing (the standard deadline cited across tax guides). An un-verified return sits in the department’s queue untouched: it is not processed, and no refund is issued against it.

Check your email and SMS for the verification confirmation. If you never e-verified — through Aadhaar OTP, net banking or the other options on the portal — do it now. The department only starts the clock after verification. Everything below assumes your return is verified; if it isn’t, fix that first.

Method 1: the income tax portal

Log in to incometax.gov.in with your PAN. Go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Filed Returns. Pick the assessment year — AY 2026-27 for the return you filed this July — and click View Details. You will see your return’s processing status and, if a refund was determined, its dispatch status.

This is the most detailed view. It shows exactly which stage your file is stuck at, so start here when something looks wrong. If you filed a revised return, check the latest acknowledgement number — the portal lists every filing, and the refund follows the most recent one.

Quick vocabulary: AY stands for assessment year — the year right after the financial year whose income you are reporting. For income earned in FY 2025-26, the assessment year is AY 2026-27.

Method 2 and 3: NSDL and Form 26AS

If you don’t want to log in to the full portal, the NSDL (now Protean) website has a dedicated refund-status check: enter your PAN, the assessment year and the captcha, and it shows your refund status directly. Quick and no login needed.

The third route is through TRACES — log in and open View Form 26AS, which reflects tax credits and refund adjustments against your PAN. Between the three, the income tax portal gives the fullest picture; NSDL is the quickest check; Form 26AS is useful when you suspect a credit mismatch.

What the status messages actually mean

Four phrases do all the work (per TaxGuru):

  • Return Processed — the department has finished checking your return.
  • Refund Determined — they have calculated that money is owed to you.
  • Refund Issued — the refund has been sent to your bank.
  • Refund Failed — the transfer bounced. (Fixes below.)

One trap: “Processed” does not mean the money is in your account. It means the math is done. Always cross-check with the Section 143(1) intimation — that is the official email/SMS notice the department sends after processing, and it states the exact refund figure. If the intimation says a refund is due but nothing has arrived, the hold-up is in dispatch, not in your return.

Why refunds get delayed

The usual suspects, in the order they most often bite:

  • The return was never e-verified. The October classic — covered above.
  • Your bank account isn’t pre-validated on the portal. Pre-validation means linking and confirming your account on incometax.gov.in so the department knows where to send the money. An unlinked account means no refund, even after processing.
  • Inoperative PAN. If your PAN isn’t linked with Aadhaar where required, the return can’t be processed at all.
  • A mismatch between your return and AIS/Form 26AS. AIS is the Annual Information Statement — the department’s record of your income, TDS and financial transactions. If what you declared doesn’t match what the department sees, the return goes into deeper checking and the refund waits.

Refund Failed? Check these four things

“Refund Failed” almost always means a bank-detail problem (per TaxGuru): an unvalidated bank account, a wrong IFSC code, a closed or dormant account, or a name mismatch between your PAN and the bank account. Fix the details on the portal, pre-validate the account again, and raise a refund reissue request. Most failed refunds go through on the second attempt once the account details are clean.

How long it really takes

TaxGuru quotes roughly 4–5 weeks after processing for the refund to land, and 4–8 weeks for returns still showing “under processing”. These are typical timelines, not promises — verification backlogs after a 5.9-crore filing season can stretch them.

Still stuck? Raise a grievance

If your return is e-verified, your bank account is pre-validated, the AIS matches, and the timelines above have passed — stop waiting and raise a grievance on the income tax portal. Pick the category that fits (refund not received is the usual one), quote your acknowledgement number, and describe what the status page shows. Grievances get a reference number and, in most cases, a response within a few weeks. It won’t make the money move faster by itself — but it puts a human pair of eyes on a file the system may have parked.

FAQ

### How do I check my ITR refund status?

Log in to incometax.gov.in with your PAN, then e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns → View Details. Or use the quicker NSDL/Protean refund-status page with your PAN and assessment year.

### What does “Refund Failed” mean?

The refund transfer bounced — usually a wrong IFSC, an unvalidated or closed bank account, or a name mismatch. Fix and pre-validate your bank details on the portal, then request a reissue.

### How long does an ITR refund take?

Typically 4–5 weeks after your return is processed, and 4–8 weeks if it is still under processing (TaxGuru). E-verify your return first — unverified returns are not processed at all.

The fastest win available today: log in, confirm your return is e-verified and your bank account is pre-validated. Those two checks clear the majority of October refund jams.
