Rs 3,000 FASTag Pass: 200 Trips, How to Apply Guide

If your car crosses toll booths often, the government has a season ticket for you. The FASTag Annual Pass costs Rs 3,000 and covers up to 200 toll trips in a year.

Quick Read

  • Price: Rs 3,000 for 200 toll trips or 1 year, whichever runs out first. Private cars, jeeps, and vans only.
  • Where it works: only at NHAI and Ministry of Road Transport toll plazas on national highways and expressways — state highway tolls are excluded.
  • How to activate: via the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI/MoRTH websites; login with your FASTag details, pay Rs 3,000, and you get an SMS confirmation.

The scheme has been live since August 15, 2025. Thousands of commuters already use it. But plenty of car owners still don’t know it exists — or misunderstand what it covers. Here’s the complete picture.

What the pass actually is

Think of it as a prepaid toll plan. You pay Rs 3,000 once. For one year — or until you’ve made 200 toll trips — you don’t pay toll charges at covered plazas. Your FASTag does the rest automatically.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) estimates that a driver using all 200 trips would otherwise have spent far more. At 200 trips, the pass works out to Rs 15 per trip, against typical toll rates of Rs 100 or more. NHAI says users can save Rs 6,000–7,000 a year, News18 reported when the scheme launched.

That math only works if you actually use the trips. A driver who crosses tolls twice a month saves nothing. A daily highway commuter saves a lot.

Who can get it

The pass is only for private vehicles — cars, jeeps, and vans. Commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, and taxis are excluded, as are two-wheelers.

Your FASTag must be:

  • Active and working
  • Linked to your vehicle’s registration number (VRN)
  • Properly stuck on your windshield
  • Not blacklisted, with no unresolved toll disputes
  • Backed by a wallet balance at the time of activation

Where it does NOT work

This is the part that trips people up. The pass is accepted only at toll plazas run by NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) — national highways and national expressways, including major corridors like the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Mumbai–Nashik, and Mumbai–Surat, per MotorBeam.

State highway tolls are excluded. So are plazas on expressways run by state bodies. Cross one of those and your regular FASTag balance gets charged as usual.

The pass is also tied to one vehicle. You can’t move it to another car.

How trips are counted

Not all crossings count the same way. News18 spelled out the rules:

  • Point-based plazas (most toll booths): each crossing = 1 trip. A round trip to the office and back = 2 trips.
  • Closed tolling plazas (entry-exit ticket style): one entry-exit pair = 1 trip.

And once you cross 200 trips or hit one year, the system silently switches back to normal per-trip toll deductions. You can then buy a fresh pass.

How to activate it — step by step

Activation happens through the Rajmargyatra app (on Play Store and App Store), the NHAI website, or the MoRTH website. The steps, per Moneycontrol:

  1. Download the Rajmargyatra app and log in with the mobile number linked to your FASTag.
  2. Tap the Annual Pass option.
  3. Your vehicle details appear automatically from the FASTag system. Check they match your car.
  4. Pay Rs 3,000 via UPI, card, net banking, or wallet.
  5. You get an SMS confirmation once the payment succeeds. Activation is nearly instant; you can verify the status inside the app.

GaadiGears notes activation usually completes within 2 hours of payment. If something goes wrong, contact your FASTag issuer’s support or the NHAI helpdesk.

A worked example: is it worth it for you?

Take a daily commuter. Home to office crosses one toll plaza each way — that’s 2 trips a day. Five working days a week = 10 trips a week. The 200-trip limit runs out in about 20 weeks — roughly 5 months.

At Rs 100 per toll crossing, 200 trips would cost Rs 20,000 normally. The pass costs Rs 3,000. Saving: Rs 17,000 — even more than NHAI’s official Rs 6,000–7,000 estimate, because that estimate assumes cheaper average tolls.

Now take a driver who makes one 400-km highway trip a month, crossing 4 tolls each time. That’s 8 trips a month, 96 a year — well under 200. Saving: about Rs 6,600 minus Rs 3,000 = Rs 3,600. Still worth it.

But a driver who crosses tolls only during Diwali and Holi trips? Skip it.

How to check your remaining trips

Open the Rajmargyatra app and go to the Annual Pass section — your active status, trip count used, and expiry date all show there, per Moneycontrol’s walkthrough. Keep an eye on it. The 200-trip cap is easy to burn through for daily commuters (see the example above: about 5 months). When the trips run out or the year ends, the system shifts back to normal per-trip deductions automatically. No renewal notice drama, just normal toll charges again. So check the counter monthly and buy a fresh pass before a big road trip if you’re near the limit.

Common mistakes that waste the pass

Buying it for a car you’re about to sell. The pass dies with the vehicle. It can’t be transferred. Selling the car mid-year means losing whatever is left.

Forgetting state highways. The biggest complaint about the scheme. If your regular route mixes NHAI and state tolls, budget both — the pass covers only the national ones.

Assuming one pass covers the whole family. Each vehicle needs its own Rs 3,000 pass. Two cars in the driveway, two passes.

Letting your FASTag go dormant. A blacklisted or inactive tag won’t activate the pass. Keep the tag linked to the right registration number and the wallet funded at activation time, as the eligibility rules require.

What happens next

The pass renews annually — buy again after your 200 trips or one year ends. If you travel on state highways too, keep your FASTag wallet topped up separately, because the pass won’t help there. For daily commuters on national highways, though, this remains the single easiest way to cut toll spending.

FAQ

Q: Is the FASTag Annual Pass available for commercial vehicles?
A: No. Only private cars, jeeps, and vans qualify. Commercial vehicles, taxis, buses, trucks, and two-wheelers are excluded.

Q: What happens after I complete 200 trips?
A: Your FASTag automatically switches back to normal per-trip toll deductions. You can buy a new Annual Pass whenever you like.

Q: Can I use the Annual Pass on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway?
A: No — that expressway is state-managed, not NHAI. The pass works only at NHAI and MoRTH toll plazas on national highways and national expressways.
