What happened on Friday night

The fire broke out at a footwear-making unit at B-293/294, Mangolpuri Industrial Area, Phase-1, in north-west Delhi, The Hindu reported, citing police. The time was about 9:30 pm on Friday, October 30.

The Delhi Fire Service said it got the call at 9:32 pm, The New Indian Express reported. NDTV put the call time at 9:31–9:32 pm. Twenty fire tenders — the big fire trucks that carry water — were rushed to the spot.

Fire officer ADO Paras Kumar told ANI, as quoted by NDTV, that the fire started in the basement of the factory. Shoes are made and stored on the site, he said. Fire crews kept the flames in the basement area so they did not spread further, he said. But smoke was heavy, and it rose through the building.

That smoke is what trapped people upstairs. Paras Kumar said one person was found on the third-floor staircase and five others were found on the fourth floor. All six were unconscious when rescuers reached them.

All six were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri. Four were declared dead on arrival. Two are still being treated, The Hindu and NDTV reported. Their condition was not given in the reports checked, so this post does not guess it.

The fire has been put out, Paras Kumar said, and cooling work was under way. Cooling work means fire crews keep spraying water after the flames die, so hot spots do not flare up again.

What police are doing now

Delhi Police said search and rescue work was still going on after the six were found. The Hindu quoted a senior police officer saying: “Further search and rescue operations are going on. Appropriate legal action is being taken as per the law.”

Police have summoned the factory owner, DCP Outer District told reporters, as reported by NDTV, ETV Bharat and Times Now. Police are also questioning the contractor and workers. One key question they are trying to answer is simple: how many workers were inside the building when the fire started? That number is not yet confirmed in public reports.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Every report checked says the same thing: the cause is under investigation. This post does not guess a cause. An early claim about a short circuit, a machine fault, or stored material would be a guess, and a guess in a story about deaths would be wrong.

Some early social-media chatter put the injured figure far higher, at 20–25 people. That figure does not match the official account in any report checked here. Police and fire officials agree on six people found inside, four dead and two under treatment. This post follows the official figure.

Why basement fires turn deadly fast

A basement fire is dangerous even when flames stay low. Smoke and hot gases rise fast through stairwells and lift shafts. People on upper floors can lose their way in thick smoke long before flames reach them.

In this case, the fire officer’s own account shows that pattern. Flames were held in the basement, yet victims were found on the third and fourth floors. The smoke, not the flames, appears to have done the harm — though the exact medical cause for each death has not been stated in public reports, so this post does not state it as fact.

Shoe factories carry extra risk. Glue, solvents, foam, leather and packed stock can burn fast and give off thick smoke. This post notes that as a general fire-safety fact only. It does not claim any of those materials caused this fire, because the cause is still under investigation.

What happens next

Police will finish counting who was inside, record statements from the owner, contractor and workers, and wait for the fire probe’s findings on cause. The two injured people remain in hospital, and any update on their condition will come from the hospital or police, not from guesswork.

For factories in Delhi’s industrial areas, the questions after a fire like this are always the same: were fire exits clear, were alarms working, and did workers know the way out in smoke? Those questions can only be answered by the probe. Until it reports, this story stays with the facts above.
