Quick Read

  • 2,526 candidates cleared the UPSC Mains 2026 written exam; the result came out on 5 November 2026.
  • Shortlisted candidates must update and submit their application form at upsconline.nic.in between 11 and 25 November, by 6 PM on 25 November.
  • Interview dates are not out yet. Marks and cut-off scores will come only after the final result.

The result is a PDF list of roll numbers and names. It sits on the Commission’s official website, upsc.gov.in, under Written Results. You need no login to see it. Open the PDF, search for your roll number, and check if it is there.

The Mains exam ran from 21 to 30 August 2026. A total of 13,343 candidates had reached this stage after clearing the Preliminary exam on 24 May 2026. Only 2,526 of them move on now. That is about 19 in every 100 Mains candidates.

How to check your UPSC Mains result

Go to upsc.gov.in. Open the Examination menu and pick Written Results. Look for the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026 result link, dated 5 November 2026. Download the PDF. It lists roll numbers in order, with names beside them.

Use the search tool in your PDF reader and type your roll number. If it shows up, you have qualified for the Personality Test.

Keep one thing in mind. The serial numbers in the PDF are not ranks. The list runs in roll-number order. Your All India Rank comes only after the interviews, in the final merit list.

What happens next: the 11–25 November form window

Every shortlisted candidate has a job to do before the interview. The UPSC notice of 5 November says so in plain words. Log in at upsconline.nic.in between 11 November and 25 November 2026. Verify your details, update them where needed, and finally submit the form. The window shuts at 6 PM on 25 November.

Miss that deadline and you risk losing your interview slot. The notice treats the form as a must-do step, not an option — so do it early, before the site slows down in the last two days.

The interview call letter works the same way it has for years. UPSC calls it the e-summon letter. It will appear only on the UPSC websites for you to download. No paper letter will reach your home by post. Keep checking upsc.gov.in and upsconline.nic.in for the dates.

Your candidature stays provisional for now. UPSC will check your eligibility and your documents before the final selection. A place on this list means you cleared the written exam. It does not yet mean a job.

The numbers behind the result

This desk pulled the full funnel together from UPSC’s own figures. No single report we read carried it in one place.

StageCandidates
Applications received8,19,372
Sat the Prelims (24 May 2026)About 5.49 lakh
Qualified for Mains13,343
Cleared Mains (5 Nov 2026)2,526
Posts notified1,016

Read that table two ways. First, about 2.5 candidates will sit for the interview for each post. Second, only 1 in about 324 applicants has reached this stage.

One figure needs a clear note. UPSC’s February exam notice put the vacancies at about 933, with 33 of them for persons with benchmark disabilities. But the Commission’s press note of 15 June 2026, issued with the Prelims result, says 1,016 vacancies are notified for CSE 2026. News reports of the 5 November result use 1,016 as well. We use 1,016 here, and we flag the 933 estimate so you can see why some sites quote a different number. The final count can still change, as the February notice itself says.

What is still not out

UPSC has not announced the interview dates. It has not published Mains marks either. No cut-off scores are out. That is normal for this exam. The Commission’s practice is to put up marks, category-wise cut-offs and answer keys only after the whole cycle ends and the final result is declared.

Mark sheets will come within 15 days of the final result. They stay online for 30 days. Till then, treat any cut-off figure doing the rounds on social media as a guess. The UPSC notice carries no cut-off at all.

Last year, 14,161 candidates had qualified for Mains against 1,087 posts. This year the pool is smaller on both counts: 13,343 for Mains, 1,016 posts. The interview round will decide who takes those posts in the IAS, IPS, IFS and other Group A and Group B services.
