Delhi costs a little more than Mumbai

One gram is a small weight. Most buyers think in 10 grams, the weight jewellers often quote. So let’s put the table in plain form. Delhi: 24-carat ₹13,902 per gram, 22-carat ₹12,744 per gram. Mumbai: 24-carat ₹13,887 per gram, 22-carat ₹12,729 per gram. Chennai: 24-carat ₹13,887 per gram, 22-carat ₹12,729 per gram. 24-carat gold is almost pure gold, at 99.9% pure. People don’t usually make daily jewellery from it because it’s soft. 22-carat gold is 91.6% pure, mixed with a small amount of other metal, and it’s the common choice for jewellery. Delhi is ₹15 a gram higher than Mumbai and Chennai for 24-carat gold. On 10 grams, that’s ₹150 more in Delhi. It’s a small gap, and it comes from local costs like transport and state taxes. It does not mean Delhi gold is better gold. The purity is the same.

Why today’s rates look almost flat

The rates moved by only ₹1 a gram. That’s close to no change at all. One report on November 2 said bullion markets were shut over the weekend of November 1 and 2, so Friday’s rates were still showing. Other reports updated their tables on Monday morning with the same small ₹1 fall. Either way, the message for buyers is the same: no big jump, no big drop today. In world markets, gold bounced back a little on Monday morning. ET Now reported spot gold up about 1% to around $3,904 an ounce, after it had hit its lowest level in more than a year in the last session. A weaker US dollar helped. When the dollar gets weaker, gold gets cheaper for buyers who hold other money, so more of them buy it. NDTV Profit reported a different driver from last week. US inflation data for September came in hot, at 0.5% for the month and 3.6% for the year. That raised talk that the US Federal Reserve, America’s central bank, may keep interest rates high or raise them. Gold pays no interest, so high rates can hurt it. That’s one reason gold fell hard last week before Monday’s small bounce.

A warning about different tables

Here’s a conflict you should know about, and we’re not hiding it. Not every site shows the same gold table today. The table in this post matches the city tables in Moneycontrol and Mathrubhumi on November 2. Both show Delhi at ₹13,902 and Mumbai and Chennai at ₹13,887 for 24-carat gold per gram. NewsX’s money page, citing Good Returns, shows the same city figures too. But other outlets show different numbers for the same day. NDTV Profit, citing Bullion.co.in, put 24-carat gold at ₹1,38,360 per 10 grams in Delhi, ₹1,38,600 in Mumbai and ₹1,39,000 in Chennai. That’s ₹13,836, ₹13,860 and ₹13,900 a gram — not the same as the table above. Tezzbuzz, also citing GoodReturns data, showed far higher figures, with Delhi at ₹1,42,410 per 10 grams. So don’t mix tables. We’ve used one table all through this post. And don’t treat any online table as your shop’s final price. Jewellers add GST, which is a tax, plus making charges for the work of shaping the gold. Always ask for the full bill price before you pay. Added context — our own maths from the table above: 10 grams of 24-carat gold in Delhi costs ₹1,39,020 today (₹13,902 × 10), and 10 grams of 22-carat gold costs ₹1,27,440 (₹12,744 × 10). An 8-gram 22-carat chain in Delhi would cost ₹1,01,952 for the gold alone, before tax and making charges (₹12,744 × 8). In Mumbai, the same 8 grams would cost ₹1,01,832 for the gold alone — just ₹120 less.

What to check before you buy

First, check the purity stamp. 22-carat jewellery should carry a BIS hallmark, a government-backed purity mark. Second, ask what the making charge is as a percent, not just in rupees. Third, ask for the buyback terms in writing. Gold shops buy back at different rates, and that matters if you sell later. Diwali is on November 8 this year, and the wedding season is close. Demand often rises before festivals. That does not mean prices must rise — world prices and the rupee matter more — but shops get busy, so don’t rush a big buy on the last day.
