  • India finished with 114 medals — 30 gold, 35 silver, 49 bronze — the country’s best-ever tally at the Asian Para Games, six more than Hangzhou 2022.
  • Day 5 (Oct 23) brought 26 medals including nine golds, India’s best single-day haul of the Games — and three world records.
  • India ended fourth behind China (427), Japan (185) and Uzbekistan (145). The campaign is over; the closing ceremony is today, with Mona Agarwal and Nishad Kumar as flagbearers.

India’s para-athletes ended their Asian Para Games campaign in Nagoya on Friday with a record 114 medals — 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze. It is the best India has ever done at the Games, six medals more than the previous best of 108 at Hangzhou in 2022. The final day alone produced 26 medals, including nine golds — India’s best single-day haul of this edition, per Khel Now.

That it came from a squad nearly half the size of the one India sent to Hangzhou makes the number bigger still. And for the first time at these Games, para-athletics wasn’t the main source of golds — the shuttlers, archers and shooters carried the final day. After Day 4’s haul, Friday turned into a full-blown gold rush.

Three world records in one day

Shooter Mona Agarwal was the star of the day. She won the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 gold with 357.5 points — a world record and an Asian Para Games record, finishing 3.8 points ahead of China’s Cuiping Zhang. It was her second gold of the Games, and she became the first Indian para-shooter to win a medal in this event at the Asian Para Games. Avani Lekhara finished fourth, just off the podium.

On the track, Sandeep Kumar clocked 52.28 seconds to win the men’s 400m T64 gold — another world record. Ajay Kumar took bronze in the same race in 53.61 seconds, a new Games record. Sandeep also picked up a bronze in the men’s 100m T44 (11.67s), ending his campaign with a gold, a bronze and a world record. Then Haney threw 60.49m in the men’s javelin F37/38 final — world record number three — after earlier winning discus bronze.

The golds that sealed it

Badminton delivered an all-Indian final for the ages: Paris Paralympic champion Nitesh Kumar beat Tokyo Paralympic gold medallist Pramod Bhagat 21-18, 21-16 to take the men’s singles SL3 gold. Debutant Naveen Sivakumar stunned Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan 21-9, 21-17 for the SL4 gold, and Thulasimathi Murugesan teamed with Manasi Joshi to win the women’s doubles SL3-SU5 gold. Nitesh also took mixed doubles silver with Thulasimathi.

In archery, Paralympic champion Harvinder Singh and Vijay Sundi beat China 5-1 in the men’s recurve team final — a first-ever doubles gold for India’s recurve para-archers. Pranav Soorma won the men’s club throw F51 gold with 32.87m, a Games record. And Paralympic champion Sumit Antil defended his javelin title with 72.46m, leading an all-Indian podium sweep with Mahendra Gurjar (silver) and Sandip Sargar (bronze).

Where the medals came from

Para-athletics still led the charge with 65 medals, including 22 gold. But the spread is the story: para-badminton added 16 medals, para-swimming 11 — with Himanshu Nandal winning three bronzes — para-archery six and para-shooting five. Table tennis chipped in too: Jehan Dorab Madan and Shubham Wadhwa took men’s doubles bronze, with Madan, at 50, becoming the oldest member of the Indian contingent to win a medal at these Games.

The closing ceremony

India’s campaign ended on Friday — no Indian para-athletes are in action on the final day, Saturday. Fans get one last glimpse at the closing ceremony today, with Mona Agarwal and Nishad Kumar named as India’s flagbearers. India sits fourth in the standings behind China (427 medals), Japan (185) and Uzbekistan (145), ahead of South Korea and Iran — though the final positions could still shift with Saturday’s remaining finals in events India isn’t contesting.
