The FDFS frenzy

If you’ve never seen a Rajinikanth release day in Tamil Nadu, it’s hard to picture. Here’s what today looked like, per ANI and PTI reports carried by ABP Live and Dailyhunt:

In Madurai, fans burst firecrackers, danced to dhol beats, blew whistles and took out a procession. Some performed angapradakshinam (rolling prostration) at the Sri Veyil Ugantha Amman Kovil in Thiruparankundram, praying for the film’s success. In Mumbai, fans gathered at theatres in the early hours, pouring milk over Rajinikanth’s posters.

A day before release, Rajinikanth’s daughter and director Soundarya Rajinikanth put up a promotional LED banner in Chennai — and joined fans dancing to a song from the first Jailer at Kashi Theatre.

One fan, Ravi, told PTI Videos he’d come from Pattalam hoping for a special-show ticket: “I will definitely watch the first show; we have been watching his films since childhood. The first part was on another level.” Another, Raj Choksi, travelled all the way from Ahmedabad in Gujarat to watch the FDFS at Rohini Silver Screens in Chennai, per AndhraVilas.

This is what “Thalaivar” means. At 75, Rajinikanth still gets this.

The advance booking mountain

Sacnilk’s final day-1 numbers, as of 6 AM today:

  • India: ₹41.48 crore gross including block seats (₹37.60 crore excluding them), 19.60 lakh tickets, 17,615 shows.
  • Worldwide: over ₹60 crore, with overseas pre-sales around ₹30 crore ($3.1M) — North America alone crossed $1M.
  • All 7 days on sale: ₹80.06 crore from 42.12 lakh tickets, per Sacnilk’s tracker.

Tamil Nadu leads with roughly 40% of the India total; Karnataka (₹7 crore) and Kerala (₹6 crore) follow, TrackTollywood reported. The Mohanlal factor is clearly boosting Kerala — the first Jailer was a massive hit there thanks to his cameo.

News18’s trade analysis projects around ₹125 crore worldwide on day one, with roughly ₹75 crore from India. If it lands there, it’ll rank among the biggest Tamil openings ever.

The film itself

Jailer 2 follows retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth) as a new threat from the criminal underworld shatters his peaceful life, forcing him back to his ruthless ways. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, with music by Anirudh Ravichander — the same combo as the 2023 original, which collected ₹604.50 crore worldwide (India net ₹348.55 crore), per Sacnilk.

The cast is stacked: Mohanlal, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, Ramya Krishnan, Vidya Balan, Yogi Babu, SJ Suryah and Suraj Venjaramoodu. Produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. Runtime 2 hours 45 minutes, U/A certified, releasing in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada.

Here’s the thing: Rajinikanth has historically rejected sequels to his blockbusters. Jailer 2 is a rare exception — which is part of why the anticipation ran this hot.

Early reviews: the great divide

The first shows are out, and the verdict is split down the middle.

The praise: Online reviewer Venky Reviews called it “Solid Commercial 1st Half” — “Nelson’s trademark comedy works well along with a few solid Superstar elevation scenes backed by Anirudh’s BGM.” Social media users hailed it as “excellent, truly outstanding,” with one reviewer giving 4.5 stars and calling it a “SURE-SHOT BLOCKBUSTER,” Eflip reported. The interval block, in particular, is getting raves.

The criticism: Others found the first half “dead slow” and disappointing, complaining about a lack of twists. The Economic Times’ roundup of X reviews captured both poles: “highly engaging” vs “dead slow.” ABP Live noted that several early viewers praised the first half as solid but found the second half “underwhelming,” with some calling the film a “rehash” of the original.

The honest read: the fans came for the celebration, and the celebration delivered. Whether the film itself holds up past the FDFS euphoria — that’s what the weekend will decide.
