₹127.25 cr: Jailer 2 Day 1 beats Jailer’s record

Jailer 2 has done it. Rajinikanth’s sequel earned ₹127.25 crore worldwide on Day 1 — beating the first Jailer’s opening-day record of ₹95.78 crore by a distance.

The film released on October 15 in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. And the numbers that came in this morning put it right at the top end of pre-release projections.

Quick Read

  • Day 1 worldwide: ₹127.25 crore — India’s net ₹59.70 crore, gross ₹70.25 crore, overseas ₹57 crore (Sacnilk final figures; overseas revised up from ₹55 crore in the evening update).
  • The record: Beats predecessor Jailer’s Day-1 worldwide (₹95.78 crore) and Vijay’s Jana Nayagan (₹42.70 crore India net / ₹77.78 crore worldwide). Economic Times ranks it the 4th biggest Tamil opening ever by India net.
  • The reach: Tamil contributed ₹43.35 crore across 9,326 shows at ~70% occupancy; Telugu ₹12.50 crore, Hindi ₹3.50 crore, Kannada ₹0.35 crore. North America crossed $2 million. Roughly 37.47 lakh tickets sold.

The numbers, broken down

Sacnilk’s final figures are in, and they’re clean. India net: ₹59.70 crore. India gross: ₹70.25 crore. Overseas: ₹57 crore. Worldwide: ₹127.25 crore. Sacnilk raised its overseas estimate from ₹55 crore to ₹57 crore late on October 16, taking the worldwide total ₹2 crore higher than the morning figure.

Other trackers see it a little differently: Koimoi puts the worldwide total at ₹125.45 crore, while trade estimates reported by TrackTollywood go as high as ₹130+ crore worldwide. The core India number — ₹59.70 crore net — is the same across trackers.

Tamil Nadu did the heavy lifting — ₹43.35 crore from Tamil alone, with 9,326 shows running at about 70% occupancy. Telugu added ₹12.50 crore, Hindi ₹3.50 crore and Kannada ₹0.35 crore. Overseas, North America alone crossed $2 million (about ₹18.9 crore), with Shloka Entertainments handling the region.

About 37.47 lakh people bought tickets on Day 1. To put that in perspective, yesterday our release-day report covered the FDFS madness — milk poured on posters in Madurai, aarti in Mumbai, fans dancing to dhol beats from Chennai to Mumbai. The celebrations turned into footfalls.

Where it stands in the record books

The Economic Times, citing Sacnilk, places Jailer 2 as the 4th biggest Tamil opening ever by India net — behind Leo (₹65 crore), Coolie (₹65 crore) and 2.0 (₹60 crore).

It also beats Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, which opened at ₹42.70 crore India net and ₹77.78 crore worldwide. And it landed above the top end of the pre-release projection range of ₹100–125 crore worldwide.

That matters because the trade was genuinely unsure. Pre-release, some analysts worried the sequel — a rare move for Rajinikanth, who has historically rejected sequels to his blockbusters — might open softer than the original. It didn’t.

Reviews: the fans won the day

Critics are mixed-to-positive. Across six reviews — Filmfare (3.0), Mathrubhumi (3.5), IndiaTV (3.5), ZoomTV (3.5), Bollywood Hungama (3.0), Sunday Guardian (2.5) and Newsbytes (2/5) — the consensus sits around 2.9 out of 5.

The common thread: Rajinikanth and Anirudh Ravichander’s background score carry the film, the first half works, and the second half drags. But on Day 1, reviews were never going to be the story. The story was the celebration — and 37.47 lakh tickets prove the fans decided.

One caution: these are opening-day numbers from a festival-like release. Sequels with mixed reviews often drop sharply on Day 2. The counter: advance bookings for Day 2 already stand at ₹17.31 crore, with Chennai alone at ₹4.01 crore. If the weekend holds, the first film’s ₹604.50 crore lifetime is in play.
