OTT Releases This Week (Oct 12-18): 9 New Movies, Shows

OTT releases this week (October 12–18) bring a packed watch list. Karan Johar’s final Koffee with Karan season arrives on JioHotstar on October 14. The Diplomat season 4 hits Netflix on October 15. In theatres, Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar and Yami Gautam’s Nayyi Navelli open on October 16. Indian Idol returns in a new legends format on October 17. Here is the full list, platform by platform.

Koffee with Karan, one last cup

The biggest streaming event of the week is also the end of an era. Koffee with Karan season 9 premieres on JioHotstar on October 14, and Karan Johar has confirmed it is the final season, the Telegraph reported. The show began in 2004 — 22 years and 161 episodes ago, as per PTI.

“So, come have one last cup of Koffee with me. One last time,” Johar said in his announcement. A new promo teases that cricketers will not be invited this season — a nod to the Hardik Pandya–KL Rahul episode from season 6 that caused a nationwide controversy. Reported guest rumours include a Dil Chahta Hai reunion and a Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham reunion, but the guest list is still under wraps. There are also unconfirmed reports that Johar may launch a new chat show under his own banner, Dharma Productions, so he keeps the show’s rights. That has not been officially announced.

In theatres: Prahaar vs Nayyi Navelli on October 16

Friday brings a proper box-office clash. Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam, starring Rajkummar Rao as public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, releases on October 16. The courtroom drama, directed by Avinash Arun and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, revisits Nikam’s role in the prosecution of Ajmal Kasab after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. It also stars Wamiqa Gabbi and Jaideep Ahlawat.

One thing worth knowing: Nikam himself set strict conditions for the film — no glorification of any character, and real names of everyone in the legal proceedings, News18 reported. Rao prepared without ever meeting Nikam, studying footage of his courtroom arguments instead. The film was originally set for August 7 before moving to October 16.

Clashing with it is Nayyi Navelli, Yami Gautam’s horror-comedy. Directed by Balaji Mohan (his Bollywood debut) and backed by Amazon MGM Studios and Aanand L. Rai’s Colour Yellow, the film is set in Meerut and follows a perfect new bride whose family starts suspecting she is a daayan (witch). Its songs “Phata Patakha” and “Bhabhi Tabaahi” are already out. Both films also face Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 in the same weekend.

Theatres are already full — Drishyam 3 just crossed Rs 300 crore on its day 10 and keeps most screens this week.

Indian Idol Legends Return (October 17)

Indian Idol comes back in a new format: Legends Return premieres October 17 on Sony Entertainment Television, airing every Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm and streaming on SonyLIV, the Telegraph reported. Himesh Reshammiya returns as judge.

The twist: former winners and finalists return as contestants, paired up to compete again. Season 1 winner Abhijeet Sawant and runner-up Amit Sana face off once more, alongside season 10 winner Salman Ali and other past favourites. “Winning just once is not enough. You have to win again and again,” Reshammiya says in the promo.

Netflix’s week

Netflix’s headline title is The Diplomat season 4 (October 15), with Keri Russell returning as US Ambassador Kate Wyler and all eight episodes dropping together, per the Economic Times. The Storm arrives the same day.

Already out and worth catching: Reporting Live (October 9), a thriller starring Parineeti Chopra as a young journalist chasing a dangerous conspiracy; Mandaadi (October 8), Soori’s sailboat-racing drama that crossed Rs 150 crore worldwide and became the biggest hit of his career as a lead; and 100 Days of Deception (October 10), a Korean series. Also this week: stand-up special Hoemonal and series Hollywood Arts (both October 14), and Roadies Rebirth (October 16).

Prime Video and JioHotstar picks

On Prime Video, Awarapan 2 (October 9) stars Emraan Hashmi as Shivam Pandit, back in the crime world in a story of redemption and sacrifice, per Moneycontrol. JioHotstar’s slate includes Disclosure Day (October 12), Vision Quest and Kappi Squad (October 14–15), and reality show Pati Patni Aur Panga season 2 (October 10).
