Net and gross: what these words mean

You will see two numbers for every film. Net. And gross. They are not the same thing.

Net is the money from tickets after the government takes its tax. Rs 26.50 crore on Saturday — that is the net. This is the number most Indian box office sites use.

Gross is the full ticket money, tax included. Drishyam 3’s gross on Saturday was Rs 31.80 crore, according to Sacnilk. Gross is always bigger than net. Keep this in mind when you compare numbers across sites. Some sites quote net, some quote gross. Mixing the two creates confusion.

The 9-day journey so far

The film opened on October 2 with Rs 62 crore net, as per Sacnilk. Day 2 brought Rs 53.50 crore. Day 3 brought Rs 61 crore. The opening weekend closed at Rs 176.50 crore net.

Then came the weekdays. Rs 21 crore on Monday. Rs 19.50 crore on Tuesday. Rs 15.50 crore on Wednesday. Rs 13 crore on Thursday. The fall was sharp, but it was expected. Big openers always drop on weekdays, and the film still held better than most.

Week 1 ended at Rs 245.50 crore. The second Friday gave Rs 14.50 crore. And then Saturday jumped — 82.8%. A jump that big on a second Saturday is rare. It tells you people are still coming back to this film in week 2.

The big story: Drishyam 3 just beat Drishyam 2’s whole run

Here is the number no one else’s day-9 article puts next to these figures. Back in November 2022, Drishyam 2’s second Saturday earned Rs 14.05 crore net. That was a 78.53% jump over its second Friday — and Sacnilk called it the fourth biggest second-Saturday jump among the top 50 Hindi films ever.

Drishyam 3 did Rs 26.50 crore on its second Saturday. Nearly double the money. And the jump was bigger too — 82.8% versus 78.53%. The third film has beaten the second film on both counts.

Want one more? Drishyam 2’s entire lifetime collection in India was Rs 240.54 crore net, according to Bollywood Hungama. Drishyam 3 crossed that figure in 9 days. One film’s whole run — beaten in nine days.

And the records do not stop there. Drishyam 3 has now crossed Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’s Rs 279.59 crore. According to Hindustan Times, Drishyam 3 is now Ajay Devgn’s highest-grossing film of all time in India. It took six years for a new film to take that crown from Tanhaji.

Worldwide, the film crossed Rs 400 crore on day 8 — Rs 312 crore from India and Rs 95 crore from overseas, as per Sacnilk figures reported by Business Today. After 9 days, the worldwide gross stands at Rs 446.80 crore.

One thing trackers disagree on

Most sites agree on Rs 26.50 crore for Saturday. But BoxOfficeWorldwide puts the number higher — Rs 30 crore, with the India net total at Rs 288.50 crore and the worldwide gross at Rs 450 crore. These are early estimates, and they get revised. We have gone with Sacnilk’s figures because most trackers, including The Times of India, Business Today, Hindustan Times and Times Now, match them.

What next: Sunday and the Rs 300 crore watch

Times Now reports the film could cross the Rs 300 crore mark in India on Sunday itself. If that happens, Drishyam 3 will join a very small club of films that have touched Rs 300 crore net domestically. We cannot say for sure it will happen — Sunday needs another strong day of 13.5 crore or more.

But Sunday is the last free day. Next week brings new releases — Jailer 2, Nayyi Naveli, Prahaar, Street Fighter and Ranabaali, according to Times Now. Those films will take screens and show timings away from Drishyam 3. A big Sunday now matters more than ever.

Sunday’s numbers will arrive tomorrow morning. Watch for one thing: does the India net total touch Rs 300 crore?
